Kuala Lumpur Bird Park- World’s largest outdoor bird aviary!
What a surprisingly fantastic morning at the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park! Nestled along the edges of the tree lined walls of the beautiful Lake Gardens Park, just a mere 10 minutes from KLCC, KL’s Bird Park is the largest free-flight walk-in aviary in the world!! Wow.
Originally, we did not really have much desire to go, unless one of our nieces or nephews came to visit, in which case this sort of activity would be at the top of the list. But nonetheless, we found ourselves pacifying my parents on their last trip here by joining them one cloudy Saturday morning (we had already gotten out of going when Davids parents visited prior- LOL). As it turns out, the 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! I am so glad my dad insisted on it (you see, out of everything they did while here, this was the one thing that HE brought up doing….gotta love it!)
Anyway, the bird park is easy to get to- you simply drive in through the main entrance of the Lake Gardens Park and follow the signs. It can get very busy with tourists, locals, and school sanctioned events so plan accordingly. I think we lucked out going on a Saturday morning with the minimal crowds; mid week mornings are probably best. The cost is not too bad- and if you carry an expat card, are a citizen or Malaysia, an international student, military, and more…. there are extra discounts on top.
The park is large and separated into 4 zones, with a gift shop and 2 different restaurants. Over 20 acres big, it contains upwards of 3,000 birds & over 200 different species- holy moly!! Its great too because the way that they designed the park with no cages in most of the park (and for most of the birds) allows the birds to roam freely throughout the grounds and breed in their natural environments as well as provide for some stunning photos and interactions with us human visitors.
I highly recommend this stop when you visit KL! Besides being a nice break form the hustle and bustle of city life, its also a great way to get in touch with some of Asia’s natural habitants. It’s also a MUST for kids of all ages. Check out our photos below of our fun morning with the birds.
Until next time, happy & safe travels~
