My neighbor and friend Christine and I recently enjoyed a day at the Islamic Arts Museum in Kuala Lumpur. Neither of us had been before and both have lived here way too long for that to be acceptable- LOL. So, off we went for some education, some enlightenment, some artwork, a yummy lunch, and of course some shopping at the gift shop!

The Islamic Arts Museum is located on the edge of the KL Lake Gardens Park, just a mere 10 minutes walk from Kuala Lumpur’s City Center. Its housed in a very modern looking building and spans 4 floors!! Of course in true Malaysian fashion, we found that it was a bit confusing in the way they laid the exhibits out, but nonetheless it was a very cultural and fun filled few hours.

They charge a very small entrance fee and of course gives discounts to locals, expats, students, etc. Their restaurant on site was amazing!! A delicious spread of middle eastern cuisine that we thoroughly  enjoyed. The setting was beautiful too. All very modern, very bright, and very scenic overlooking the middle of the building with an outdoor sitting area surrounding a fountain. The gift shop surprised us! It was not only filled with a huge variety of items, but all were very reasonably priced! They had a kids section, books, artwork, jewelry, statues, fashion pieces, and more! We both scored some great all purpose greeting cards and a couple islamic designed scarves, that we are both framing to hang on our walls. Such a fun idea! I can’t wait to take my next visitors back here for more fun, food, and shopping!

The exhibits housed such things as pictures of historical figures of Malaysia, the transformation of the country, its religious beliefs, and integration of other cultures and religions. It also showcased the history of the Malaysia flag and all its states. Very interesting!  There was a huge section dedicated to dozens of models of famous mosques around the world, detailing where they are located. Those were stunning! They also had a ton of old artifacts- varying from weapons to dinnerware, clothing and rugs, old books & islamic artwork, and more. I learned a ton about the islamic religion and culture and I think its well worth the visit….plus its a nice & quiet break (not to mention cooler with air-con!) from all the other aspects of KL’s city life :).

Here are some pics that I captured with my iPhone….
