OK, this one is a bit late, but better late than never right? Please bear with me as I play catch up for a while….

Back in November while my parents were in town, I found out about an awesome tour called the KL Food Tour. For those of you who don’t know, Malaysia is widely known throughout Asia as well as the rest of the world, as a gastronomical hub of SE Asia. Between the Indigenous-Malay, Chinese- Malay, Indian-Malay, Western expat influences, and old British heritage, the cuisine here in Malaysia is like no other. Your senses will quickly be overloaded with smells, sights, & sounds (yes sounds) of the food being served up throughout the country.

Kuala Lumpur is the heart of Malaysia, and thus offers up divine options for cuisines. Since Malaysia is well-known for its “Hawker Stall” dining (basically, a cart set up on the side of the street selling made to order delicacies), it can be a little daunting about knowing were to start….and trust me, you cannot miss out on trying food from a hawker stall….much of the time it can be better than the restaurants!! This is where the KL Food Tour comes in. They offer both day & night “off the eaten path” tours, KL walking tours, as well as custom tours. Beware though- since these tours are all smaller in size and designed to give the participants 1-on-1 authentic time, they do book up far in advance so try to schedule at least 1 month ahead!

The “rules” are simple and as follows: plan for 3-4 hours total, wear comfortable & casual clothes & shoes, bring your cash for the tour guide (they order all the food for you), don’t forget your camera, empty your bladder as much as you can beforehand (and bring tissues), bring hand sanitizer, and most importantly, come HUNGRY! 🙂

Since we already live here in KL and were taking my parents, our personal tour guide just picked us up from our home directly and drove us around in her car!! Wow, talk about service. Jacintha was amazing! She spoke great English and since she is originally from Malaysia, she had a ton of knowledge to share. A bonus for us too was that she did her undergrad and graduate studies in the states so she was able to compare some customs, foods, etc along with us. I highly recommend Jacintha but I am sure all guides are amazing at their job!

Since Jacintha knew the Petaling Jaya (PJ) area the best of KL, that is where she took us. We started at a traditional Malay stall where they served up the best Nasi Lemak I have ever tried thus far! We then ventured on to a Chinese Malay grouping of stalls to devour a variety of noodle dishes, tofu, and seafood. After this we took a break and headed to the humongous SS2 neighborhood night market. I’ve been to a ton of markets throughout SE Asia and this market took the cake- it was enormous and was an amazing experience for us all. After this mini-break, we jetted off to the Bangsar neighborhood where we capped off the night with Indian Malay food that was out of this world delicious. Please enjoy our tour through the pictures below….and don’t forget the next time you visit KL or live here and have visitors come out, BOOK THE KL FOOD TOUR!!!
